American Airlines MileUp- Beginner's Credit Card

The American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card is a great beginner’s card that offers no annual fee. It’s a great American Airlines credit card to dip your toe in the world of miles and points. One of the best parts about this card is that it’ll give you bonus miles when you spend on groceries. If you are approved for this card, keep this in your wallet for everyday grocery spend to gain 2x American Airlines miles per $1. Keeping no-annual-fee cards for the long term can increase your average account age and boost your credit score.

American Airlines MileUp Bonus

With the current American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp offer, you’ll earn 10,000 American Airlines miles and a $50 statement credit after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months of opening the account. This is enough for a one-way domestic flight.

Additional Benefits

  • 25% savings on in-flight snacks

When you fly American Airlines, you’ll save 25% on in-flight drink and snack purchases when you pay with this card.

  • Virtual card number for online purchases

If you shop online a lot, you can generate a virtual card number to use. This number is linked to your American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp card but is different from your actual card number, which gives you more protection against fraud. You’ll be able to shop as you normally would without having to enter the number on your physical card.

  • Early and/or better access with Citi Private Pass

Citi Private Pass gives Citi customers early access to concerts, sports events, theater performances and more. Other times, you’ll get preferred access for better seats or invitations to special events. I use this perk every time there is a Beyonce concert.

  • Concierge access

You can call Citi Concierge to help with:

  • Dining reservations

  • Entertainment tickets

  • Travel plans

  • Looking for a specific item

If you can’t get a reservation at a restaurant, for example, you can ring the concierge to see if they can work their magic. This is great for shows like Hamilton and fancy restaurants in big cities.

How to earn miles with the American Airlines MileUp

The American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp card comes with a solid return on everyday spending with no limit on the number of miles you can earn.

You’ll earn:

  • 2 American Airlines miles per dollar on eligible American Airlines purchases

  • 2 American Airlines miles per dollar at grocery stores, including eligible grocery delivery services

  • 1 American Airlines mile per dollar for all other purchases

Domestic coach flights on American Airlines in economy cost as little as 7,500 miles each way.

Bottom Line

The American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card is a great choice for beginner’s looking for their first travel card, or those that need to quickly top their American Airlines account. With this card having a $0 annual fee, there is no reason to not get this card. This card does have foreign transaction fees. So I’d suggest leaving this card when traveling out of the country. However with the grocery store bonus spend, this is a great card to use often.
